Costa Rica's borders are open to all international travelers. The requirement for Costa Rica visitors to have travel insurance if they are not fully vaccinated for COVID-19, as well as the requirement to present a negative PCR COVID-19 test after arrival in the country ended on March 31, 2022.
Travel insurance is and travel health insurance is now optional for all visitors to Costa Rica, regardless of vaccination status. The requirement to upload your proof of vaccination has also ended as of April 1, 2022.
The country has also suspended use of the Costa Rica Health Pass. Prior to April 1, 2022, fully vaccinated visitors were required to utilize the Health Pass website to upload their proof of vaccination. They were also required to have a QR code as proof of vaccination to gain entry to certain businesses, events, and public places. As Costa Rica no longer differentiates requirements for vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers, and now allows all businesses and events to operate at 100% capacity, the Health Pass and QR code mandates have ended.
Despite the end to the previous requirements, travel insurance is still highly recommended for all visitors to Costa Rica. Breakthrough COVID-19 cases are still possible even in fully vaccinated travelers, and the risk of another illness or injury is ever-present when taking an international trip.
