It appears that a US federal government shutdown is once again looming. If this happens, it would mean that many nonessential government functions will be halted. But how could this affect you if you or your family members are visiting the USA, or if you’re traveling within the US domestically?

US Travel Will Still Be Possible and Safe

A government shutdown does not mean that essential travel-related government employees such as Customs and Border Patrol Agents or air traffic controllers won’t be working. You’ll still be able to fly to the US and travel within the US safely. It simply means that nonessential government employees will not be working. Since immigration agents, federal law enforcement, and air traffic controllers are absolutely essential for security and safety, they will still be working even if the government is shut down.

Flight Delays are Possible

While essential government employees are still expected to report to work during a government shutdown, they’re required to do so without pay. Employees of the US federal government do not receive paychecks when the government is shut down.

The White House has already warned that this could impact travel. And there could be some truth to this assertion. During a government shutdown in 2019, tens of thousands of TSA agents and air traffic controllers – required to work temporarily for free – elected to call out from work, causing staffing issues. If the same occurs this time around, it’s reasonable to expect some extra delays.

You May Have to Change Your Itinerary

If your vacation plans involve visiting a US national park, national museum, or national monument, a government shutdown could affect you. These facilities are largely staffed by nonessential government employees who may be told to stay home from work in the event that the government shuts down. This could include places like the Smithsonian, the Washington Monument, and many national park facilities.

While you will still most likely be able to visit publicly accessible areas in national parks and monuments, some facilities may be closed during a government shutdown due to guides, maintenance workers, and any other employees considered nonessential being told to stay home.

The USA Will Remain Open Regardless

A looming government shutdown is no reason to cancel US travel plans. You may just need to plan on a little extra travel time, and be willing to be flexible with your itinerary when it comes to visiting museums and parks. With this in mind and the right visitors medical insurance or travel insurance, you can still get plenty of enjoyment from your trip.
