Q:My Mother is a Green cardholder. She has been in the US for 30 years but has never worked in the States. Basic medical coverage is provided by the Military since I am a retired veteran. However, the Military will change the policy soon, so I am seeking other solutions. I was told she could buy Medicare if she did not work in the US. Is that true?

Q:If my father, who has known heart problems, visits the US and experiences a heart attack requiring hospitalization and surgery, will your insurance cover the costs? If my deductible is 100 and I have 90/10 coverage up to 60,000 with PPO option, and I receive a 20,000 bill from hospital, how much will the insurance pay?

A:
Please keep in mind that Visitors Insurance plans are primarily designed to cover someone for new illnesses, injuries or accidents that either exist in the body or occur after the policy effective date. They are not designed to cover pre-existing conditions, routine doctors visits, or preventative treatment. Many plans will include coverage for what is called acute onset of pre-existing conditions, which is a sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence of a pre-existing condition that occurs spontaneously, without advance warning, and that generally requires to seek immediate medical treatment within 24 hours. The final determination on whether or not the situation would meet the acute onset definition will be made by the plans claims department and they will use the medical records and attending physicians statement to determine if the situation is an eligible expense or not. If your father is still in his home country, and you'd like a plan that provides coverage for pre-existing conditions, you may consider the Visitors Protect. In the example you have provided, if the $20,000 is considered an eligible medical expense the plan would pay $19,400 and your responsibility would be a total of $600. You would pay your $100 deductible, and $500 which is 10% of the first $5,000. This is how most plans will work. Q:HI, My mother in law is visiting US and i am planning to take visitors insurance as she will be staying in US for 5 months. She has some pre existing medical problems like Blood Pressure, Thyroid and back pain. She will be carrying the required medication with her for her stay period in US as prescribed by her Doctor in her home country. She does not need any maintenance of her medical conditions as she has prescribed medications with her. All she need is that whether the insurance covers if any emergency occurs due to her pre existing medical condition. Where she can get into ER and get her medical issue stabilized temporarily, so that she can return back to her home country to continue her treatment. Please clarify. Thanks & Regards

A:
There are plans like Atlas America or Patriot America Plus that offer the Acute onset of pre-existing conditions. This may be what you are looking in for coverage, but to learn more about the acute onset of pre-existing conditions please click the hyperlink to see the article. Visitors Protect is the only plan that offers coverage for pre-existing conditions, but it still cannot be known, expected, or routine treatment. It has a 90 day minimum purchase and $1500 deductible built into the plan for anything relating to a pre-existing condition. It must be purchased before the insured has left their home country, and the sub-limited maximum amount of coverage that is available for pre-existing conditions is $25,000 ($50k, $100k, or $250k policy max available for expenses related to new injuries or illnesses). You are welcome to run a quote in the Visitors to U.S.A. section of the website to see what plans are available. If you have any additional questions please let us know.
